11105 Private J MURPHY Killed in action during the River Clyde Landings. in Gallipoli. Born in Aldershot and was resident there when WW1 broke out, but travelled to Dublin to enlist in the Royal Dublin Fusiliers. The fact that he travelled to Dublin to enlist in the Royal Dublin Fusiliers implies that there may have been some family connection with the regiment - the 1st Dublins had been based at Aldershot from April 1897 to May 1899. Private Murphy first saw active service in the Balkans, entering that theatre of operations on 25/4/1915, and was killed in action the same day (the 1st Battalion Royal Dublin Fusiliers landed from the River Clyde at Helles on 25/4/1915). Medal Index Card indicates that his father, Patrick Murphy, applied for his son's medals. At the time of application Patrick Murphy's address was 59 Blackfriars Street, Edinburgh. 1914-15 Star and Victory Medals. British War Medal

11241 Private Patrick TOOLE 1st Battalion "A" Coy. Son of Patrick and Bridget Toole, of Kilcullen Co. Kildare. KIA age 25 on 11/05/1915. Helles Memorial. He was also the brother of Ray Donoghue's grandfather Michael. Ray is best known to new Kilcullen residents as the genial occasional barman in Fallon's Cafe Bar. But to older Kilcullenites he is somebody we grew up with and also remember well his contribution to Kilcullen Drama Group in former years. Private Toole -- Ray reckons the lack of the 'O' prefix is a mispelling, as his family recollections are all of the O'Toole name -- didn't make it too far into the campaign that began on 26 April 1915. His death is just one of 21,000 commemorated on the obelisk. Ray himself has no recollection of Patrick, but does of his grandfather Michael, also a soldier in the Irish Fusiliers. "He was an assistant to a Chaplain in the war, and was a POW in Germany. He and Patrick were born in Yellow Bog and would have grown up there, and they went to school in Halverstown. 11282 Private Thomas Donohoe, Prisoners of war, in particular, went through hell during the war. The Earl of Mayo, a retired Lord Lieutenant and resident at Palmerstown House, Naas, reported from London hospitals which held Irish prisoners of war recently returned from Germany. His medal card just says "discharged" The following is an extract from one of his reports:-
“I went to see Private T. Donohoe, 11282, Royal Dublin Fusiliers. I saw him at York Gallery, Brompton Hospital, Fulham road, on December 14th, 1915. He said: ‘I was taken prisoner on August 27th, 1914, and was then taken to Senelager, and there the food was very bad. All latrines were open, a very heavy fatigue duty in building huts, and the men were hammered by the Germans in charge if they shirked work. Some parcels were received in November, 1914, at Senelager.....In July, 1915, I went into hospital with lung trouble. I was badly looked after in hospital. There was only one German orderly to about 50 patients in the ward; no medicines, but, they were given morphia. Some men never woke up from this morphia treatment, and they were buried. The morphia was given out in drops by the orderly, and he was not very particular about the dose.” Kildare Observer, 1 January, 1916
