Enlisted: Newcastle Upon Tyne, Northumberland. Died: 24-May-1915 Killed in Action aged 21 Memorial: Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Panel 44 and 46, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium Second Battle Of Ypres: St Julien, April - May 1915, The 2nd Battalion of the Royal Dublin Fusiliers suffered near annihilation during the second battle of Ypres on the 24th of May 1915. On May 24th, 1915, around 2.45am, the Germans launched a poison gas attack. By 9:30 pm, out of a battalion strength of 666 men, all that remained when the battalion ‘retired’ was one officer and twenty other ranks 'retired' to headquarters. For the record, in just eighteen and three quarter hours, the Dublin Fusiliers had suffered a loss of 645 men who were blown to bits, gassed, or driven insane by the effects of poisonous gas. In the years that followed the ending of the war, many of those who did survive the attack and suffered a gas wound, would die a very slow and painful death from weakened lungs. The German gas attack in the early hours of May 24, was described as being about three miles long and forty feet deep. The Allied troops in the trenches had little hope of escape. The 2nd Battalion of the Royal Dublin Fusiliers were serving at the front that night. The gas bleached the grass, blighted the trees and left a 'broad scar of destruction in its wake'. Outside the city of Ypres on the road to Menin, stands the majestic Menin Gate memorial. Engraved on that memorial are 143 names of Dublin Fusiliers belonging to the 2nd Battalion who died on the 24th of May 1915.

Copy of letter received by Kildare Observer "We have received the following letter from Private Philip Halleron (9639), 11. Bat. 6 Camp. No. 729, Limburg (lahn). Germany bearing the post mark of 26th April:- "Sir, - On behalf of a few Naas men of my regiment (the Royal Dublin Fusiliers) who are here as prisoners of war and who were readers of your paper before the war broke out, I ventured to write this card and to ask you if you could see your way to send us something now in our time of trouble. As it seems to be the custom of provincial journals to look after the prisoners of their particular town or county, I am sure you will not be far behind other papers in this matter. Should you see your way to fall in with this suggestion, the most suitable things to send are eatables, tobacco and cigarettes at present. Wishing your paper every success. The number here from Naas and district is about 10 or12 men. I remain, sir, yours sincerely Philip Halleron
10217 Private Michawl O'Hara 2nd Battalion. On Saturday afternoon a large and sympathetic gathering of the neighbouring public attended at Harristown station on the arrival of the 3.10 p.m. train to meet the remains of Michael O'Hara (Private in the R.D.F.) who died at Netly Hospital from wounds received a few days previously. O'Hara had been in the thick of the fighting since the very commencement, and is one of three brothers all in the army fighting for King and Country. The War Office - at the request of his relatives - had the remains sent home and laid in their last resting place beside the peaceful little village of Ballymore - Eustace far from the din of battle. As the sad cortege reached the outskirts of the village the solemn pealing of the chapel bell announced its arrival, and the villagers flocked to pay a last mark of respect. The Rev. Father O'Brien, C.C., conducted the burial service. On Sunday morning one of the worshippers at the church very thoughtfully placed a beautiful wreath on the grave.

8762 Sergt. W Cooke, 2nd Battalion the Royal Dublin Fusiliers hero, returned to his home in Kilcullen last week and visited many friends in Naas and district. He relates many heroic deeds of comrades and are gone. Fighting himself, he escaped with a bullet grazing his head from eye to ear. His greatest regret is the loss of Colonel Loveband, whose all men adored. We dip the following from a recent issue of the "Irish Times" - "Sergeant Cooke, of the Dublin Fusiliers, was the hero of another incident. He had perched himself on top of a farm from which he could look down upon the German trenches. In one of them he saw an officer and ten men crawling along the back of trench, and with extraordinary coolness, he picked off the men one by one. Then hurrying down from his coign of vantage, he ran into the other end of the trench, and levelling his rifle at the astonished Lieutenant, shouted, "hands up." A few minutes later Cooke walked back to his own lines triumphantly escorting his prisoner".The D.C.M. has been awarded to our fellow-countryman, Acting-Sergeant W. Cooke, 2nd Battn. Royal Dublin Fusiliers, who hails from Kilcullen. The supplement to the "London Gazette" of Thursday contains the following:- 8762 Acting-Sergeant W. Cooke, 2nd Battalion Royal Dublin Fusiliers. For conspicuous gallantry and coolness on 25th April, 1915, and the following eight days, patrolling every night up to the enemy's lines. From the top of a farmhouse he killed ten Germans, and then went out and took prisoner their leader, an officer. It was reported in the Leinster Leader that Corporal W. Cooke was promoted to Sergeant as a result of exploits in battle. He was serving at the Dardanelles when he was further distinguished by the award of the Medal of St. George, 2nd Class conferred on him by the Czar of Russia “for conspicuous bravery and gallantry.” In July 1915 the Kildare Observer reported that Sergeant Cooke had been awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal: “For conspicuous gallantry and coolness on 25th April, 1915, and the following eight days, patrolling every night up to the enemy’s lines. From the top of a farmhouse he killed about ten Germans, and then went out and took prisoner their leader, an officer.” However, his luck was not to last and in 1915 he was reported killed in action while fighting in the Dardanelles on October 3rd.

41340 Private SSamuel Nicholas TIPPETT, 2nd Battalion Two: British War and Victory Medals, who was killed in action on 17th October 1918. Born in Giveren, Cornwall, he enlisted at Camborne (Praze), and had formerly seen service as in the Royal Artillery. The son of Thomas and Sarah Ann Tippett, of Wheal Clowance, Praze, Cornwall, he was 21 years of age at the time of his death, and is buried in the Highland Cemetery, Le Cateau,. On 17th October 1918 the 2nd Battalion Royal Dublin Fusiliers formed part of 149th Brigade, 50th (Northumbrian) Division. Private Tippett was killed in action during the final advance in Picardy and would be a Battle of the Selle, 17th - 18th October 1918, casualty. At 6.30am on the morning of 17th October 1918 the 2nd Battalion Royal Dublin Fusiliers crossed the river Selle, one company by a bridge that had been constructed for the purpose, and three companies by fords. They were almost immediately met by heavy machine gun fire, which caused a number of casualties. Having successfully crossed the river, the 2nd Dublins, along with other battalions of the 149th Brigade, launched a concerted attack on the German front line, with three battalions in line, the 2nd Dublins in the centre, with the Scottish Horse on their left and the 3rd Royal Fusiliers on their right. The attack was held up by stiff German resistance, and confusion reigned after two heavy German counter-attacks. By this stage the 2nd Dublins, along with the 1st Yorkshire Light Infantry and the 2nd Munsters, held a line between an orchard and some brickworks. The whole line was then firmly established, and by 8pm the brickworks had been captured, although heavy fighting continued throughout the night.

Christopher Rogers: “In the months leading up to Christmas 1914, many infantry battalions called up their reserves to replace the men who were killed or taken prisoner in the battle that took place along the Western Front in the previous months. These were men who had served their time in the regular army and went onto the army reserve list. One of these army reserve men was Christopher Rogers, a carpenter who lived with his wife and children in … Bishop Street, Dublin. He was called up and went to the 2nd Dublins who were near Armentieres in France. He wrote home to his wife telling her everything’s grand. And she wrote back to him saying, ‘you would be surprised to see the children, Mary Ellen is always watching the letter man for a letter from daddy, Christy is getting to run about’. Christopher Rogers was not long in France when he was killed by a sniper in Christmas week
Pte. Hugh Lynch: “Private Hugh Lynch of the 2nd Dublins came from Railway St., Dublin. He lost his job as a messenger boy, in Amiens St., and at the age of nineteen he joined up in1913. According to family, he was a religious young fellow. The War Office in London wrote to Mrs Lynch and told her. ‘In reply to your letter of the 13th May, I am directed to tell you that the regimental number …. Hugh Lynch, 2nd Battalion Royal Dublin Fusiliers, has not appeared on our casualty lists.’ His body was never found. The poor chap was blown to bits. His mother cut that little paper clipping of her son’s death and for years she kept wrapped up in a Sacred Heart scroll.
Sgt. Willie Malone of the 2nd Dublin Fusiliers was killed at Mouse Trap Farm . In April 1916 during the Easter Rising, his brother, Volunteer Michael Malone of the Irish Volunteers was killed at 25 Northumberland Road near Mount Street Bridge in Dublin.
20234 Anderson Lance Sergeant, John Charles ‘C’ Company, 2nd Battalion, Died 23 October 1916 Jack Anderson came to Belvedere in 1908, at the age of 11. He had attended the Holy Faith Convent in Haddington Road before then. His family lived at ‘St John’s’, 62 Tritonville Road, Sandymount in Dublin. After he left Belvedere, Jack Anderson studied Engineering. He was popular with his fellow students. He was still at university when the war broke out. He immediately left his studies for the army. As a soldier, he was sent to Dollymount to study at the School of Musketry in March 1916. He passed his examinations and subsequently became an Instructor of Musketry in Youghal, Co. Cork. He was, at this time, a Lance-Corporal with the 2nd Battalion of the Royal Dublin Fusiliers. He was promoted to Lance-Sergeant and sent to the front in France. He took his military duties very seriously and earned high commendation from his officers for the conspicuous ability with which he discharged his duties. Only a few months after arriving in France, he met his death. A comrade gave the following account of the circumstances (during which British forces were attacking German Gun pits) in which Jack Anderson was last seen: In the first attack on the gun pits, ‘C’ Company went beyond the pits but had to fall back. Two men saw Anderson in a German trench beyond the gun pits, and considered that he did not come back when ‘C’ Company retired. A second attack was made by our battalion, and the gun pits were taken and held, but the German trench where Anderson was last seen was not taken. It is a case of prisoner if alive. Our guns dropped shells on the German trench, so he might have been killed by that means. For some months it was hoped that Jack Anderson had been taken prisoner, but when no word came from him, he was presumed dead. Jack Anderson was only 19 years of age at the presumed time of his death. He is commemorated at Pier and Face 16C of the Thiepval Memorial at the Somme in France.
Private Joseph CLARKE 2nd Battalion Writing to a young Dublin woman who organised comfort parcels for the Irish troops in France, Private Joseph Clarke stated: “I was sorry to hear of the of the rebel rising in Ireland but I hope by the time this letter reaches you the condition will have changed and things normal again. “There is no-one more sorry to hear of the rising than the Irish troops out here – it worries them more than I can explain. “Their whole cry is, if they could only get among them for a few days, the country would not be annoyed with them any more. “Some of the men in this Battalion are very uneasy about the safety of their people and one or two poor fellows have lost relatives in this scandalous affair. “We just have had some men returned off leave and they tell us that Dublin is in ruins... We of the 2nd Battalion, the Dublins, would ask for nothing better than the rebels should be sent out here and have an encounter with some of their ‘so-called allies’, the Germans. “I do not think anything they have done will cause any anxiety to England or her noble cause. We will win just the same. “These men are pro-German pure and simple and no Irishmen will be sorry when they get justice meted out to them, which, in my opinion, should be death by being shot.”

Died Saturday, 19th October 1918, aged 25. From wounds received during the Battle of the River Selle, near Le Cateau, France. Born in Churchtown and raised in the first house to the right of the Pound Corner in the village, he enlisted at Mallow in the 2nd Battalion., Royal Munster Fusiliers. He later served with the 2nd Battalion, Royal Dublin Fusiliers. He is buried in Roisel Communal Cemetery Extension, Somme, France. Roisel is a small town 11 kilometres east of Peronne. It was occupied by British troops in April, 1917, recaptured by the Germans on 22nd March, 1918 and finally retaken by the British in the following September. Roisel Communal Cemetery Extension, which was begun by German troops, was developed in October and November, 1918, by the 41st, 48th, 53rd and 58th Casualty Clearing Stations, and it was completed after the Armistice by the concentration of British and German graves from the country North, East and South of Roisel. There are now over 850, 1914-18 war casualties commemorated in this site.
William A. Browne had been courtmartialed and dismissed from RDF in 1899, but lost no time in enlisting for war service, again in the Royal Dublin Fusiliers. He was sent to Cork to join the regiment and there promoted to corporal and made drill instructor for officers in training. On 10 November 1914, he was sent in a draft to France to join the 2nd Battalion Royal Dublin Fusiliers, surprisingly posted to the same company and same section of the same battalion from which he had been dishonorably discharged in December 1899, during the Boer War. He rejoined D Company, No. 3 Section in his rank of corporal the winter and spring fighting in the trenches with bouts in the rear rest areas. On 25 April, 1915, he was wounded at Ypres, near St. Julian and evacuated to Dublin for treatment. On his discharge from hospital, he got ten days leave to visit Preston where he saw his wife and family for the first time since leaving on his voyage to South America on the SS Vianna. Browne writes of his homecoming as a happy and contented time. At the expiration of his leave, Browne returned to Cork to join the 1st Reserve Battalion of the Royal Dublin Fusiliers, which was shipped to the Dardanelles for action in the Gallipoli Campaign. The battalion arrived in the Dardanelles 15 June 1915 and remained in action until evacuated to Egypt. The 29th Division of which the Royal Dublin Fusiliers form part was transferred to France the following March (1916) and assigned to the Somme Sector. Against all odds, Browne survived trench warfare until 1917 when he was transferred to the Railway Operations Division in need of experience firemen. He remained in the ROD until he was demobilized on 16 February 1919. So ended chaotic life of this most extraordinary of military misfits with do enviable a lineage. He was done with the Army, but there was work yet to be done with the Navy, which claimed his attention. In April 1919, he joined the Mercantile Marine Reserve and became part of the North Russian Relief Force to Archangel where he remained until the evacuation in April 1919. He was paid off at Portsmouth in September of that year.
10505 Sgt Joseph MATTHEWS 2nd Battalion prisoner of War. was captured August 10th, 1914 in Germany. He was later interned and was married at Murren
17984 Private P. Campbell of the 2nd Battalion has the same regimental number as Private John O’Brien of the same battalion. This is explained by the fact that Campbell served and died of wounds on 15 October 1916 under the alias of ‘John O’Brien’. He is buried in Fintown Catholic Cemetery in Ireland.
6745 Pte Martin Walsh of the 2nd Battalion has same number. Killed 01/06/1917
