28238 William Henry Davies, Company Sergeant Major William was born in Edgbaston, and enlisted at Dublin into the 11th Hussars. He later transferred to the 8/9th Battalion, Royal Dublin Fusiliers, which had been constituted by the merger of the 8th and 9th Battalion in France on the 24th October, 1917 following heavy casualties at Ypres. The Battalion were attached to the 48th Brigade, 16th (Irish) Division, and had just taken part in the Battles of Messines and Langemarck. They moved to the Somme, and were caught up in the German Spring Offensive during the Battle of St. Quentin, where William was Killed in Action on the 23rd March, 1918. His body was lost in the terrible fighting that continued in the area over the coming months, and so he is remembered on the Pozieres Memorial.

According to the War Diary - on 29 March 1918 the 1st Royal Dublin Fusiliers had some problems in that 130 men refused to carry wire up to the line. It says it is not known what happened to these men. This man died on that day
