Buried at Agnez-les-Duisans, near Arras. His Lt. wrote : " A portion of a shell struck your son on 23 April, while he was in charge of a Lewis gun in the trenches, the piece entering the back of the right shoulder apparently injuring the lung. He was conscious to the time of leaving the trenches, and did not admit suttering excessive pain. Your son was a thoroughly reliable soldier, in whom his officers had every confidence, and his loss is much felt by lus comrades in the battalion, amongst whom he was so popular." 26351 2nd Lt John McKenna, Medal Card gives MC, commissioned from ranks, then medals forfeited This could be, but I am not certain, Laura (cryptonym) Belgium Marthe McKenna (1892-?) recruited by British intelligence in 1915, she gained high Belgium, French and British honors for her exploits in Flanders town of Roeselaire until captured by Germans, spending 22 months in prison (she was saved from execution having been awarded the Iron Cross for nursing German wounded). After the war she married John McKenna, an officer in the Dublin Fusiliers, who ghosted her book, “I was a Spy” (18 editions) which was made into a classic film by Victor Saville (1933) and went on to write a series of successful spy books together.
