25911 Private David Bluett. 1st batallion, joined in January 1916 aged 18. My grandfather has an item on his service record indicating a desertion that is then scored out as cancelled 3.11.1917. If a man is absent from his unit for no apparent reason for more than 5 days he is declared a 'Deserter'. On his return his absence would be investigated and if a simple answer for his absence was forthcoming for instance he was in hospital or in the field, the Desertion would be removed and cancelled. Other entries below it indicate promotion to lance corporal in February 1917. He was later captured 21.3.1918 and repatriated 6.1.1919. Family stories suggest he was badly wounded and got frostbite from laying in a trench for a week near Paris, but nothing verified. Medal Card
