August 1916 War Diary - 10th RDF

11 Jul. Dublin. 9am, Battalion changed from 2nd Res Battalion Royal Dublin Fusiliers to 10th Service Battalion Royal Dublin Fusiliers, and enlisted for service with the 190th Infantry Brigade, 63rd Royal Naval Division.

15 Jul. Dublin. 9am. Advance party consisting of Lt W.P.Connolly and 50 other ranks left for Kilbride Camp.

18 Jul. Dublin. 9am. Battalion left Royal Barracks to complete musketry at Kilbride Camp, Co Dublin.

18 Jul. Dublin. 9am. 2nd Lts W. Mount, Guisani and Jenkins with 55 other ranks proceeded to Dollymount for Lewis Gun course.

23 Jul. Dublin. 9am. Major E.St George Smith, Royal Dublin Fusiliers appointed to command the 10th Battalion Royal Dublin Fusiliers vice Lt Col L. Gratton Esmonde who has been appointed to command 11th Res Battalion Royal Dublin Fusiliers. Major P. H. Hora second in command. 10th battalion Royal Dublin Fusiliers has been appointed second in command 11th battalion Royal Dublin Fusiliers.

25 Jul. Dublin. 9am. Major E.St G. Smith took over command of the battalion from Lt Col Esmonde.

26 Jul. Dublin. 9am. Capt F.J. Scott Murray promoted to Major and second in command of the battalion from 24 Jul.

31 Jul. Dublin. 9am. Advance party of 5 officers and 100 other ranks left Kilbride Camp for Royal Barracks and subsequently Phoenix Park.

3 Aug. Dublin 5am. Advance party of 2 officers and 50 other ranks left Phoenix Park at 5am for Pirbright Camp.

3 Aug. Dublin. 4pm. Main body of the battalion arrived at Phoenix Park.

5 Aug. Dublin 3.30pm. Main body of battalion left Phoenix Park for Pirbright Camp (hutments)

6 Aug. Pirbright. 12 noon. Main body of the battalion arrived at Pirbright camp hutments.

6 Aug. Pirbright Received orders to mobilise through Aldershot Command.

14 Aug. Pirbright. Capt L.M.Ormrod RWF appointed major to battalion.

17 August Pirbright Mobilisation completed.

18 Aug Pirbright. 3.30am Battalion moved to Havre, leaving behind 2nd Lt W.R. Brereton Barry and 50 other ranks in charge of Details, and Lt C.W.Grant and 28 other ranks in isolation to rejoin on release.

19 Aug Havre 7am Battalion disembarked and proceeded to rest camp

20 Aug Havre 7pm Battalion left to join 190 Infantry Brigade (63 Royal Naval Division) in the field, billeting at Maisnil-les-Ruitz

21 Aug Maisnil-les-Ruitz 5.30 pm Battalion arrived and took up billets.

23 Aug Maisnil-les-Ruitz 3pm The GOC 1st Army inspected the 190 Brigade. This battalion was present

24 Aug Maisnil-les-Ruitz 4.30 1 other rank, GS wound self inflicted (wounded)

27 Aug Maisnil-les-Ruitz. Major L.M. Ormrod reported his arrival and took over command of A Company

28 Aug Maisnil-les-Ruitz A Company attached to 13/KRR for training in trenches and with 13/KRR relieved the 11/Royal ? at Cite Calonne on 29 Aug

29 Aug Maisnil-les-Ruitz 1.30pm. Lt C.W.Grant with 27 other ranks reported his arrival from Pirbright.

29 Aug Maisnil-les-Ruitz 2.30pm. C Company Capt E.J.Hamilton i/c with 4 officers and 167 other ranks left for billets and attachment to Anson Battalion

29 Aug Maisnil-les-Ruitz 3pm. D Company Capt A.S.Delany i/c with 4 officers and 158 other ranks left for billets and attachment to 2/Royal Marines

29 & 30 Aug. Maisnil-les-Ruitz C Company attached to Anson Battalion relieved trenches at Cite Calonne.

29 & 30 Aug. Maisnil-les-Ruitz D company attached to 2/Royal Marine relieved trenches at Cite Calonne.

31 Aug Maisnil-les-Ruitz Casualties 4 other ranks killed and 1 wounded in action with A Company

31 Aug Maisnil-les-Ruitz From London Gazette 30/8 Major E. StG. Smith promoted to the rank of Lt Col.
